Sahara bags Pune IPL Team
Chennai, March 21, 2010: Sahara India Pariwar, a major business conglomerate and the prime promoter & patron of sports in India, today added one more feather to its cap by winning the Pune franchise of Indian Premiere League (IPL). The Group under its company Sahara Adventure Sports Limited had bid for Ahmedabad, Pune and Nagpur. Sahara bid the highest amount of US $370 million (Rs 1702 crore). Being the highest bidder the group chose Pune as their franchise. Sahara’s Pune IPL team will be added from the IPL 2011, the other team being Kochi won by Rendezvous Group.
Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Abhijit Sarkar, Head - Corporate Communications, Sahara India Pariwar said, “ ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara has always believed that Sports is the most healthy aspect of the society and should be promoted at all levels. It has been his vision to promote sports and sportsmanship among the countrymen. IPL is has emerged as a healthy mix of commercial and cricket passion which will go a long way in promoting this spirit and also become an venue for nourishing young talent. Our involvement with IPL, beyond business is also a manifestation of our deep rooted commitment towards promoting sports and encouraging the youngsters towards sports.”
The sponsor of Indian Cricket and Hockey, Sahara India Pariwar, had earlier this year, adopted Indian Boxing, Wrestling and Archery and very recently Indian Shooting in addition to covering support of a total of 56 sportsmen in these four games until after London Olympics 2012. The group has also organized/ also organizes the well acclaimed ‘SAHARA INDIAN SPORTS AWARDS’ bringing together all sports, irrespective of their popularity, on a common platform. The comprehensive awards recognize and honour the achievements of Indian sportspersons who have won laurels for the country in their respective sporting disciplines.
The group in order to uplift sports at domestic and grass root level supports the legendary Calcutta Football League, Sheesh Mahal Cricket Tournament and many other sports at the national, state and district levels. Recently the group has extended its sponsorship to the Uttar Pradesh senior cricket team which represents the state in Ranji and all other domestic tournaments.
