Sahara Hospital becomes life-saving destination for severe accident cases

Lucknow , April 13, 2009: The trauma center of Sahara Hospital, with its world class mix of advance technology and experienced faculty is becoming a life-saving destination for many critical accident cases. Exemplifying its advanced medical proficiency, an experienced team of Surgeons at Sahara Hospital, Lucknow, successfully performed two highly critical surgeries which were turned down by all the renowned medical centers and hospitals of the city.

CASE 1

On Saturday, April 4 th, 2009, a major surgery was performed on a 25 year old man, Mr. Ata-Urrehman from Barabanki who met with a road accident on 30 th March 2009, while riding his motorcycle.

A cook by profession, Mr. Ata-Urrehman, sustained severe multiple skull fractures crumbling the face drastically and critical injuries aggravating the situation further. There were fractures on lower jaw (Mandible), nose, forehead, Zygoma, cheek-bones (Maxilla), and orbital bones with leakage of brain fluid (Cerebrospinal fluid) which made Mr. Ata-Urrehman’s case extremely complicated. He received a primary treatment at a private hospital in Barabanki from where he was referred to a reputed Hospital in Lucknow. The doctors, in the said Hospital, after acknowledging the severity of the injury and the deterioration in his condition, referred the patient to some other higher medical centre.

As a last ray of hope, Mr. Ata-Urrehman was rushed to Sahara Hospital. The Trauma Care Unit of Sahara Hospital, immediately assigned the case to a team of seasoned Plastic Surgeons, who after screening the complications involved in the case, decided to proceed with the surgery without any further delay. The patient underwent a two-staged surgery. In stage-1, debridement and fixation of the lower jaw (Mandible) was done. In stage-2, reshaping of the forehead, nose, cheek-bones (Maxilla) and Zygoma was done by approaching through the scalp area. The duration of the stage 1 surgery was 4 hours while that of the stage-2 surgery was 6 hours.

Mr. Ata-Urrehman is now recuperating well and is presently on a soft diet. Moreover, he has also now started speaking with considerable ease. The complex surgery was performed at Sahara Hospital, in two stages by a team of doctors which included Plastic Surgeons - Dr. Vaibhav Khanna and Dr. Romesh Kohli along with an Anaesthetist – Dr. Sandeep Pawar.

Mr. Ata-Urrehman and his family have shown their satisfaction for the treatment. Still under treatment, he said, “I am feeling good now. Now I can breathe easily. I have taken milk and juice also.”

CASE 2

A general medical practioner, namely Dr. R. K. Tripathi aged 31 years who is a resident of Amausi area at Lucknow unfortunately met with a road traffic accident on 27th February, 2009 at 10 pm while he was driving his motorcycle on Rae Bareily Road, Lucknow.

Dr. Tripathi met with a severe blow injury with multitude of fractures of nasal and forehead bones with exposed brain matter and leak of cerebrospinal fluid (brain fluid). Dr. Tripathi, with mud and dust contaminated wounds was rushed to the nearby tertiary care medical institute where after primary first aid he was referred to a District Hospital. The concerned doctors in the Hospital after acknowledging the severity of the injury asked the patient to get shifted to some other higher centre.

The patient was taken to Sahara Hospital as a last ray of hope for the further management of the critical condition of the patient. The Trauma Care Unit of the Hospital took the matter and the patient was immediately taken up by a team of Plastic and Neurosurgeons, who after screening the problems of the patient arranged for emergency operation.

The patient underwent exploration with debridement to remove all the mud and dust from the brain area. Post that a major reshaping of forehead and nose was undertaken with local bones by primary Cranioplasty and Rhinoplasty. This was done with the bone pieces which were completely crushed in the accident. The surgery continued for more than 8 hours. With the dedicated efforts of the team lead by Neurologist Dr. Mazhar Hussain, Dr. Manu Rastogi; Plastic Surgeons Dr. Vaibhav Khanna, Dr. Romesh Kohli and Anaesthetist Dr. Aarti Agarwal. The patient has done well in the post-op duration and ultimately he was been discharged on his foot.
